don't think mitt romney will be able to do that effectively during the course of the debate, because in the debate he has to try to appeal to the middle. i think they wanted to get a little something out there for the base, so is that they would have -- so that today they could be, you know, talking about that horrible, you know, barack obama, the black man, in advance of the debate. >> yeah, absolutely, shock, horror, barack obama is a black man. michael, i've read your outstanding piece in which you talk about the fact that the process of fact-checking by voters has actually declined. it's almost a suggestion we've had so many lies through this campaign, and i can think of at least 60 delivered by the romney/ryan camp, that people are just not responding to it anymore. >> you know, the irony is the press is actually much better at calling out these deceptions but the public has not yet shown they are willing to move on these deceptions. they don't -- they for give their own guy for deceiving and they love blaming the other guy for deceiving. there hasn't been any punishment. if you

the debate he is a winner. >> for mitt romney he has to change the narrative. he has to give people to say, let me take a second look at mitt romney. he is not the guy i thought i had experienced. melissa: ed, what do you think mitt romney's strengths are from a debate perspective. >> he is smart as whip. he can think quickly on his feet. he understands all all numbers and analysis and theory behind everything is is proposing. so i think i'm sure he was debating champion in school. melissa: yeah. >> i expect him to do well. but i think the president is equally sophisticated and capable on that dimension. melissa: paul, you make a great point. people in the audience are watching the guy not talking. what are some of the things we're watching out there they should be aware of? >> how much attention they pay to each other versus their notes. you will be watching the ability to smile when a jab is thrown. melissa: right. >> instead of reacting negatively. i think you will be looking for after fa billty. that sense this is a real person, both side. they know in advance the jabs that will come b

of the sunday talk shows, the one before the first presidential debate everybody was saying mr. romney has not outlined his own economic proposal so while you may say mr. obama has fallen short mr. romney is not putting out his case. >> i disagree with that. there is a lot of specificity on proposals on energy, the keystone pipeline issue and regulation and make sure we stop the huge growth of regulations and entitlements. he has been very specific. i think his tax program is pro growth. there is a lot of specificity and people look at it. it is the kind of thing the economy needs right now and that is what basic economics tells me. >> bernanke has sited your work as a big influence on current monetary policy yet mr. romney has said ben bernanke should be fired. are you advising that ben bernanke should get fired? >> i don't get into personnel issues. i would say on quoting different rules i think quantitative easing has not been helpful. i think we had good monetary policy in the '80s and '90s until recently. that is what we want to do. that is what the romney program is all about. >> joh

on the numbers that are out there. that will be the debate. lori: this is romney's last and final chance to convince us. do you agree? lou: not all the time is the first debate the most highly rated. most of the time, that is so. there will be a vice presidential debate. in 1984, it was the second debate between ronald reagan's that got a lot more attention. what happened is ronald reagan's stumbled badly in that first debate. some even said at that point he was too old to be president. he comes roaring back in the second debate with that famous line i will not hold my opponent youth and inexperience against him. hard to say. you know, how this plays out. i think it is very obvious. the pressure is on mitt romney to deliver the goods. he obviously had satisfied. he knows what he is talking about. the problem is, he has sounded very callous, very distant. the 47% think, however, you could argue it made him look indifferent. almost -- i do not think that was his argument. he has an initiative to say i can but i kind face on what will be a smaller government. does he have that? melissa: i w
